Smith-Gilbert Gardens: Tuesday April 13th
R.S.V.P. by April 6th
The Hiram Butler House, the centerpiece of the Smith-Gilbert Garden, was built in 1880. Major Butler purchased 160 acres of Cherokee land through an 1832 land lottery. Major Butler was known for his role in the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War. A single-level dwelling with 5 bedrooms and triple-layer solid 12″ thick brick walls has both Italianate and Greek Revival influence. In 1970 after numerous owners, Robert R. Gilbert purchased the property and established the gardens and sculpture collection. There are 31 contemporary sculptures. In 2005 the 13-acre garden was purchased by the City of Kennesaw. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
