Sack Kids Hunger
Every Saturday, 12:00 – 2:00 pm
What is Sack Kids Hunger?
Sack Kids Hunger started in November/2010 in response to the needs of children who receive breakfast and lunch during the school week, but have limited resources on weekends. Every Saturday from noon to 2:00 pm, volunteers gather at Buford First United Methodist Church to prepare and distribute sack lunches to children in our community.
Who participates in Sack Kids Hunger?
The Sack Kids Hunger ministry is for the entire community. We receive volunteers and resources from the people of Buford First UMC as well as other churches, businesses, groups, and organizations in and around Buford. For a full list of these wonderful groups and organizations, check out our SKH Sponsors page.
Many of these groups have also sponsored or organized fund-raising events that have not only raised money for the purchase of the food that goes into the sack lunches, but have also raised awareness of the Sack Kids Hunger ministry to the Buford community. For a list of past events as well as events planned for the future, check out our SKH Events page.

What else does Sack Kids Hunger do for the children of Buford?
At Sack Kids Hunger, the #1 priority is helping to feed the children of Buford. From time to time, we are also blessed with the opportunity to “do a little more” for the children through donations of time, services, and other resources, including:
- During the “Back to School” time of year in August/2011, Sack Kids Hunger included school supplies with the sack lunches.
- On the Saturday of Labor Day weekend in 2011, we passed out hot dogs to the people of Buford.
- On Christmas Eve 2011, we had a special visit from Santa Claus himself. The children were overjoyed to meet him, receive a special gift bag of goodies, and many of their family photos taken with him. (A huge thank you to Santa Atlanta for donating their time and services during this event. Thank you!)
- The Saturday before Easter 2012, the Easter Bunny paid a visit to Sack Kids Hunger. The kids loved it and especially enjoyed the candy he brought!
All of these special “extras” are made possible through the volunteer efforts and resources of the people of Buford First UMC as well as many other people and organizations in the community.
How has this ministry grown?
This ministry continues to grow by leaps and bounds every week. As of April/2012, over 6,700 sack lunches have been distributed. Since November 21, 2010, Sack Kids Hunger has distributed sack lunches EVERY weekend … including Christmas Day and New Years Day.

How can I help?
Sack Kids Hunger can always use your prayers that God will continue to bless this ministry, those who receive and those who give. Other ways you can help include:
- VOLUNTEERS. Workers are always needed to help assemble bags and make sandwiches from 10 am to noon every Saturday. We are also in need of volunteers to assist with the distribution of the sack lunches from noon to 2 pm every Saturday. For information on volunteer dates that are available, contact Sack Kids Hunger at sackkidshunger@att.net.
- FOOD. This ministry is all about distributing food to those who need it, so food donations are always welcome. We include sandwiches in our sacks, so jars of peanut butter and jelly are always needed. We also can use these items (all in single serving packages):
- Individual serving sizes of soup, ravioli, or mac & cheese
- Chips, cheese or peanut butter crackers in single serving packages
- Juice boxes and CapriSuns
- Individual desserts
- Individual boxes of cereal and granola bars
- Single serving cups of fruit or apple sauce.
- MORE FOOD. Fresh fruit and bread (please schedule this through a team coordinator due to the shelf life of these products).
- SUPPLIES. Package supplies such as #12 sacks and Ziploc style sandwich bags.
- MONEY. Monetary donations are always welcome, and please note that ALL monetary donations will ALWAYS go directly to the purchase of food. Donations can come from anyone and from anywhere … individuals, groups, even companies and organizations.
- PRAYERS and ENCOURAGEMENT.
- SPREAD THE WORD. Let your friends, neighbors and co-workers know about what Sack Kids Hunger is doing (share this web page with them - http://www.bufordfirstumc.org/skh).
- EMAIL. Add your address to our e-newsletter list to stay updated. Just email sackkidshunger@att.net and ask that you be included on the email distribution list.
Receipts for items purchased for Sack Kids Hunger can be submitted to the BFUMC church treasurer as an “in kind donation” for tax credit. No reimbursements can be made without prior agreement with the Sack Kids Hunger coordinator.
