Appalachia Service Project (ASP)
The Appalachia Service Project (ASP) serves the Appalachia region, which includes Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Adults and youth work together for local families to make their homes warmer, safer, and drier.
Hinton Rural Life Center (HRLC)
The Hinton Rural Life Center (HRLC) is very much like ASP, with the mission work being done for families in the Appalachian Mountains region, one of the poorest areas in our country.
The Hinton Rural Life Center is nestled in the Southern Appalachian mountains, overlooking beautiful Lake Chatuge in Hayesville, NC. Hinton is a mission agency of the United Methodist Church that creates opportunities for work teams from all over the country to experience the rich mountain culture found there, to serve with others in repairing or building new homes with families, and to grow in their understanding of faith in action. The work includes repairing porches, painting homes, fixing leaky roofs, building ramps, replacing rotten floors, and other similar home repairs, thus greatly improving living conditions. Building relationships with the families in the area and developing Christian community are important aspects of the mission work.
To help build fellowship, all mission volunteers stay at the Hinton Center in the guest rooms of the Lodge or in one of the Cottages, share meals together in the dining room, and utilize any and all of the meeting facilities. BFUMC mission volunteers are placed on work teams with youth from other churches. This way, we get close to others and make new friends!
Disaster Relief Mission Trips
Church members have gone on several mission trips to areas that have been impacted by natural disasters, including trips to Mississippi to help in the recovery efforts caused by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, a mission trip to areas of Tennessee to assist in recovery after a series of tornadoes impacted the area, and other trips to areas across the country hit by the effects of natural disasters.
Miracle Mission Gift
In the Spring of 2011, the Youth Choir’s Miracle Mission Gift was to provide 31 Vashti Children’s Home residents with a deep sea fishing trip in the Summer of 2011. This is a therapeutic trip which the children look forward to every year. We’re pleased to announce that the Youth Choir was able to make this miracle happen! The Youth Choir was also able to take a mission trip through South Georgia and Florida for Spring Break, which included a special visit to the Vashti Children’s Home in Thomasville, Georgia.
