At Buford First, our local outreach and church-based missions benefit those locally, across the United States, and around the world.
Annual Great Day of Service
The Great Day of Service is offered each year, usually in the Fall, as a way for our church family to come together in service to our community and beyond. Every year, we first meet at the church in the morning for a brief commissioning service and breakfast. Following that, we’re off to the job sites with transportation provided for some of the more distant worksites. There are many projects to choose from every year, many of which are right at our church. Projects run into the late morning and early afternoon, with most ending between 1:00 and 3:00 pm.
Sack Kids Hunger
Sack Kids Hunger started in November 2010 in response to the needs of children who receive breakfast and lunch during the school week, but have limited resources on weekends. Every Saturday from noon to 2:00 pm, volunteers gather at the front steps of Buford First United Methodist Church to hand out sack lunches to children in our community.
Tree of Life Garden
The Tree of Life Garden is our “church garden” that is maintained by church members and where vegetables are grown and then donated to those in need within our community.
Buford Aid Project (BAP)
The Buford Aid Project (BAP) aims to serve the Buford community by pushing the point that missions does not mean we have to go across the world to work, but that we can help others in our own backyards. If you or anyone you know needs help with small or large jobs including but not limited to: yard work, home repairs, food, clothing, or other needs, please let us know.
Gainesville Aid Project (GAP)
The Gainesville Aid Project (GAP) is a wonderful mission experience for youth going into 7th grade and up. Mission work is done around the Gainesville area through the Antioch UMC. The youth stay in the Antioch Church Campground, eat meals in the church fellowship hall, and during the day go out in teams of 8 to 10 with adults to do yard work, build wheelchair ramps, and clean the homes of those who need the help. GAP holds a worship session each evening where youth can share how God has been working in their lives.
Gwinnett Children’s Shelter
Our church hosts the children from the local Gwinnett Children’s Shelter once a month during the school year at our Community Supper. We have been to the shelter to do landscaping and also support the work there with an offering through the Alternative Christmas Project.
Wesley Walk for Others
The Wesley Walk for Others is an annual event sponsored by the Wesley Community Centers, whose vision it is to build God’s Kingdom through connections that lead to transformed lives and communities. Their mission is to offer programs that help senior citizens live life more abundantly as a result of services that make a practical and daily difference in their lives. The Wesley Walk for Others raises awareness and funds for this cause and many members of Buford First participate each year.
Buford First UMC works with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, Inc. to organize blood drives several Sunday mornings during the year. LifeSouth is the primary blood provider for numerous local hospitals and medical centers, including Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, so blood donations come right back into the local community!
North Gwinnett Cooperative
Buford First UMC supports the North Gwinnett Cooperative through collections of food and other items throughout the year as well as through two annual food drives where hundreds of bags of food and other household items are collected.
Buford First UMC provides several meals annually for homeless women and children through the community kitchen at Grace United Methodist Church in Atlanta. These meals are provided by religious organizations such as Buford First UMC as well as Atlanta businesses through a division of Action Ministries called Atlanta Urban Ministries.
Alternative Christmas Program
The Alternative Christmas Program provides a unique gift giving opportunity that honors your family, friends and even co-workers, while spreading God’s love to people in real need. Each year, Buford First selects several local, regional, and worldwide charities and organizations for Alternative Christmas giving.
Throughout the year, we collect items such as soap, toiletries, Christmas cards, and devotional guides to donate to inmates at the Phillips State Prison.
Knitting for Others
Knitting for Others is a hands-on needle work group that knits and crochets blankets for various charitable organizations and church members who are hospitalized or homebound.
